George Ezra Newton

George Ezra Newton Jr. was born August 17, 1928 in Denver, CO.

On August 18, 2018, just a day after his 90th birthday, he made his transition due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.

George made his transition at home in Lake Arrowhead, California, with his wife Mary and son George Jr. by his side, his hands in theirs.

As a boy, George attended elementary school in Beverly Hills, graduated high school from, the distinguished Thatcher Academy in Ojai, and earned his college degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. But it was the Marines who made George a man as he proudly served his country in The Corps.

He was a resident of Apple Valley, CA for over sixty years.

George was preceded in death by his father George Ezra Newton Sr., his mother Adelaide Meade Newton, his wife Bonnie Coleen Newton and wife Edith Goodwin Newton and son-in-law Jeffry Miller.

He is survived by his wife Mary Frances Wright Newton, his brother John Newton in Northern CA, his son George Robert Newton of Corona CA, his daughters Janida Baader and husband Dan of Apple Valley CA, Romallie and her husband Richard Wolf of Apple Valley CA, Carrie Miller of CO and Sherry and James Considine of Yucaipa CA. Grandchildren: Colton and Adelaide Miller. Bonnie Newton; married to her husband Hiram, William Delatore. Travis Neal and Morgan Considine. Chelsea Considine, seven great-grand-children: and three great-great-grandchildren.

Newt, as he was affectionately known, came to the High Desert in the early 1950's with his wife Bonnie and four children. He, along with his business partner Mike “Tex” Meeken, were the top lieutenants for Newton T. Bass, who they helped develop much of what we know today as Apple Valley Ranchos.

Ever the entrepreneur, in the early 1960's George purchased property along I-15 and Hwy 395. Here he ran a restaurant and service station which became known as “Newton's Outpost” for many years, a favorite stopping point for thousands of weary travelers and truckers.

George earned his pilot's license at the age of fifteen and in the mid 80's with his wife Bonnie, his children and a very large great Dane (as his co-pilot) flew from the Apple Valley Airport to his family ranch in Colorado. That was one of his favorite memories.

The Apple Valley Rotary International Foundation called upon his services to serve as President where he spearheaded many philanthropic efforts including the administering of the Polio vaccine for thousands of third world country children. He was fondly known as Mr. Rotary. He was the quintessential example of the Rotary motto: “Serve Above Self”. George Ezra Newton lived and breathed that motto.

In 2002 George was named Humanitarian of the Year from St. Mary's Hospital. Consequently in 2009 he and his wife Mary were named as honorary chairs and in 2011 they were both named Patrons of the Year at the St. Mary's Gala.

Both he and his wife were founding members of the Don Ferrarese Charitable Foundation, providing scholarships for deserving local students.

When George retired, he fulfilled his dream of living by the ocean in Baja Mexico where he resided with his Mary; working tirelessly supporting The Hearts of Baja; an organization helping young children. Also helping to sustain Pretty Horses Rescue; they rescued and fell in love with horses and dogs, cats and even a bird; who are now thriving thanks to their efforts.

Failing health brought him back to California in Lake Arrowhead. He lived out his days humbly recalling memories of a life deserving of a hero's honor. A life well lived oh good and faithful servant.

Memorial services will be held September 5th at 11:00 am. At Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 24000 Waalew Rd., Apple Valley CA. Luncheon, reception and celebration of a life well lived to follow immediately.
