Elaine Henderson Obituary

Elaine Henderson (Ray), age 63, passed away on November 19, 2025, in Big Bear Lake, California. Born on October 17, 1962, in Newfoundland, Canada, Elaine lived a vibrant and purpose-driven life marked by deep faith, unwavering love for her family, and an enduring zest for life.

Elaine’s journey was one of resilience and reinvention. Alongside her husband Mark Henderson, Elaine co-owned Thelma's Family Restaurant & Bakery in Big Bear City, California for 37 years. Together they built not just a business but a beloved community gathering place that reflected their warmth and hospitality. She then began her professional life as a flight attendant, a role that suited her adventurous spirit and love of people. However, after being on a flight departing from New York City on the morning of the catastrophic 9/11 events she decided it was time to chart a new path. With characteristic courage and determination, she returned to school later in life. What began as a simple golf class to ease back into academics soon blossomed into a full-time pursuit of nursing. Elaine earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from West Coast University and became a Registered Nurse—a testament to her strength and compassion. She worked in ICU, Telemetry, Hospice, and Medical Surgical units. She worked up to the last 2 weeks of her life. She was grateful to have the opportunity to help others in their time of need.

Elaine’s greatest joy came from her family. She shared 41 devoted years with Mark, the love of her life. Together they raised four children: Carly Ornelas, Brandon Henderson, Blake Henderson, and Bryce Henderson. Though Bryce preceded her in death, his memory remained ever-present in Elaine’s heart.

She was also a proud grandmother to Kyla Bolster, Knox Bolster, Zoe Henderson, Mia Henderson, Remy Henderson, Maverick Henderson, Mariah Ornelas and Danni Ornelas. Her children’s spouses—Melissa Henderson, Jenah Henderson, and Joey Ornelas—were embraced as part of the family she cherished so deeply.

Elaine is also remembered by her great aunt Pat Arnold; siblings Michael Ray, Julie Jensen, and Carrie Ray; and her best friend of 53 years, Lauri Robison.

A devout Catholic throughout her life, Elaine treasured her relationship with Jesus Christ above all else. One of her most meaningful spiritual milestones was having her marriage convalidated by Bishop Robert Barron in Santa Barbara; a moment she held close to her heart.

Elaine found joy in music and spent the past six years studying both acoustic and electric guitar. Whether strumming chords or soaking up sunshine outdoors—especially on the beaches of Carpinteria; she embraced every moment with enthusiasm. Her love for nature was matched only by the light she brought into every room she entered.

Known for being the life of any gathering and a true lover of life itself, Elaine lived fully—with laughter on her lips and love in her heart. Her legacy lives on through the family she nurtured and inspired.

Memorial Services will be planned in Carpinteria, CA during the summer when family & friends can enjoy the beach and celebrate her life! Dates to be announced.
